Ravindra Deyshappriya - Research Director


Ravindra holds a Master’s degree in Development Economics from the Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University, Japan, for which he received a scholarship from the Asian Development Bank. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics with first class honours from the University of Peradeniya in 2007. Ravindra started his career as a lecturer in Economics and has over five years experience as an academic.

He joined the LKI in June 2016 and prior to this he worked as a Research Professional at the Centre for Poverty Analysis, Sri Lanka. His research interests include economic growth, financial development, development economics, poverty and inequality. He has published a number of research papers in both local and international journals and has authored two books.

Barana Waidyatilake – Research Fellow


Barana holds an MSc in Conflict Resolution and Governance from the University of Amsterdam and obtained his undergraduate degree in International Relations and Sociology from the University of Melbourne, with first class honours. In 2012, he received a scholarship from the University of Queensland to participate in its Summer Research Program, where he examined how humanitarian crises were visually depicted in the print media.

Barana joined the LKI in February 2016. Prior to this, he worked at the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies in Colombo. His research interests include South Asian security, the role of media in conflict reporting and institution-building in post-conflict societies.

Anishka De Zylva – Research Associate


Anishka is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College in the United States, from which she received a degree with honors in International Relations and Economics. While at Mount Holyoke, she received a Fellowship to study International Development for a semester at the University of Sussex in the UK.

Anishka’s research interests lie in peace and security in South Asia, international development and public policy. Anishka joined the LKI in January 2016 from the UNDP, where she worked in its Governance for Local Economic Development programme. While a student, she completed internships at Foundation of Goodness and at the Centre for Science and Development in New Delhi. 

Rapti Ratnayake - Research Associate


Rapti graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2014 with an honours degree in Law (LLB). While at University, she gained experience by interning for the American Insurance Group (AIG) and Clifford Chance LLP, and for the South African Legal Aid Board. 

Rapti joined the LKI in April 2016. In 2015, she received a Fellowship with The Asia Foundation to engage in Sri Lanka's post-war recovery. Prior to joining the LKI, she worked for the International Centre for Ethnic Studies where she carried out research on identifying the barriers to female economic empowerment in the Northern Province.  Her research interests include public law, human rights, international law and transitional justice. 



Aruni Hewapathirana – Events and Administration Officer


Aruni graduated from the University of Colombo in 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Labour Education, and in 2015 with a Master’s degree in International Relations. Aruni has ten years experience in administration and finance in the public sector, having worked at the Ministry of Mass Media and Information, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Aruni coordinates events at the LKI and the hiring of LKI facilities. She assists the Executive Director in corresponding and liaising with external parties. In addition, Aruni maintains the LKI’s files and records of inventory and staff attendance.

Sanjaya Gunarathna – Finance, Procurement and Human Resources Officer


Sanjaya has sixteen years experience in finance and administration. He is a qualified member of the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) and holds a higher diploma in Library and Information Studies from the University of Kelaniya.

At the LKI, Sanjaya handles the financial transactions of the Institute and prepares its monthly statements of accounts. He also maintains all records related to the personnel of the LKI and attends to repairs of all equipment.

Nicola Wijeyarathna - Project Coordinator


Nicola began working at the LKI in July 2016, initially as a Programmes Assistant, and in her present role of Project Coordinator since January 2017. Nicola is a graduate of the Elizabeth Moir School, where she served as Community Service leader in her final year. She was a member of various student clubs, and with a keen interest in language and literature, was active in the Press and Essay clubs. She also participated in voluntary activities hosted by groups such as the Rotaract Club of Colombo, and Habitat for Humanity.

Nicola plans to pursue her higher education in the liberal arts, in the fields of International Relations and Political Science.

Leanne Amunugama - Research and Programmes Assistant


Leanne is a graduate of Ladies’ College, Colombo. She was involved in many extracurricular activities while in school, including multiple drama productions, Girl Guides, hockey, and karate. She was vice-captain of the karate team and a member of the Workshop Players.

Leanne began working at the LKI in December 2016 and is serving as in intern during her summer break from her studies at the University of Queensland, where she is an undergraduate majoring in English and History.

Thisuri Ekanayake – Research and Communications Assistant


Thisuri recently graduated from the Mahamaya Girls’ College in Kandy. She participated in many extracurricular activities while at school. She was the President of the Interact Club and an active member of Girl Guides’ Association, while also participating in sports and the arts.

Thisuri began working at the LKI in October 2016. She plans to continue her higher studies at the University of Colombo, in the fields of International Relations and Economics. 

Hasheem Nizar - Senior Programmes Assistant


Hasheem received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. He is also in his final year of an undergraduate programme at the Open University of Sri Lanka, majoring in Political Science and International Studies. Hasheem holds a Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs from the BIDTI and is pursuing his Post-Graduate Diploma from the same institute, alongside the Advanced Training Program on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law at the CSHR, University of Colombo. 

Prior to joining the LKI in October, Hasheem was a manager at Myown Group, and also worked at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. 


Support Staff

K.P.W.G. Sugath – Caretaker

Sugath was previously attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has eight years experience working at the LKI, having previously worked in an individual capacity for the late Hon. Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar.

Sugath is responsible for supervising the maintenance of the premises, and for setting up and monitoring the facilities and logistics for all events at the LKI. He also assists the General Office with postal, communications and programme requirements.

K.G.P.C. Aththudawa – Office Assistant

Aththudawa has twenty years experience working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including three years at the High Commission of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom. He joined the LKI in 2014.

He assists the General Office staff to carry out their official duties, overlooks office maintenance, travels for the purposes of purchasing/delivering office documents and is the acting receptionist.

M.H. Dahanayake – Office Driver

Mangala was attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for three years, prior to joining the LKI in 2007. He is responsible for driving and maintaining the office car.

W.M.K.G. Gayan – Office Assistant and Driver

Gayan has been at the LKI for three years.  He is responsible for assisting the Executive Director’s Office with deliveries, messages and maintenance. He also assists the Caretaker during events and serves as a driver to the Executive Director.
